Exchange Traded Funds or ETFs are investment funds that are traded on a stock exchange in a similar manner to a stock or share. The fund is a container that holds assets such as stocks and bonds. The value moves up and down with the value of the underlying assets hence its value is continually moving up and down as these assets move in value. This allows the fund to be traded at any time throughout the trading day.

The selection of the assets is either based on tracking an index or they can is some recent cases be actively managed. This index tracking allows the fund managers to attract investors by selecting a particular sector of operation such as green, ethical, sustainable etc. Index tracking keeps the cost and overheads down to a minimum to maximize the funds value.

Socially Responsible Investments (SRI) can be defined as an investment strategy that puts profits on an equal footing with wider social issues. It is closely associated with the terms ethical investment and socially-conscious investments.

SRI is not a new trend or a new term as it has its routes in religious groups or faith based investing over many centuries. It therefore is difficult to pin down as these terms are relative to ones own beliefs, morals or ethics. It is widely accepted that personal views alter it meaning and hence the judge of what is SRI may have to be the results of the activity being invested in. As they say hindsight is a wonderful thing.

The ethical investor is thought to miss out on the more lucrative short term cash generators that service the income based investment sector. While that may be difficult to refute, the ethical or socially responsible investor has choosen to forgo such in order to promote a more sustainable world. That does not mean that profit is is dirty word, its just not 'profit at any cost'.

What are Green Investments?

Green investments are made primarily by defining what green means to you. Once you have a personal definition of green you can select any of the normal investment vehicles such as stocks, shares, funds that fit your requirement. With Mutual Funds you have to decide which fund has the prospectus to match your aims while Exchange-traded Funds will follow a 'green' index. For Stocks you will have to look at the individual company and see what its activity and goals are and how that fits with your view of green investing.
